About JC Ryan
JC Ryan holds a military degree and served as an officer in the military for seven years before a crippling back injury forced him to change careers. He returned to university studied law and became a lawyer, running his own private practice for more than fifteen years before he moved oversees, became an IT project manager and finally got the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream of being a writer.
With the knowledge and experience gained by living and working on three continents and as many careers, Ryan amassed a wealth of knowledge and material which equipped him to take up fiction writing.
Since the publication of The Tenth Cycle in May 2014, his first novel in the very popular Rossler Foundation Mysteries, JC Ryan has become a bestselling author of spellbinding archeological mysteries and crime suspense-thrillers.

Interview: “A Few Moments with JC Ryan”
How long have you been writing?
I started writing non-fiction books about six years ago when I was 54 years old. I always believed that I didn’t have any imagination and would never be able to write a proper story. But about three years ago a friend of mine asked me why I don’t write fiction. He thought I had the ability to tell stories. It took me a while to think about it and then one day I said; “Why not? If you don’t try, you always fail.” So that’s when I started and wrote the first book in the Rossler Foundation Series – The Tenth Cycle.
What made you decide to become a writer?
As I have said, I always thought about it but never had the belief that I had enough of an imagination to be a writer. English is my second language which was another thing which held me back until I wrote the first book and was so overwhelmed by the responses I got from readers. I have learned not to worry too much about my language skills because of the help of my editors and to concentrate on telling the story and leave the language polishing to my editors.
Now I love writing. I think the saying is true: ‘There is a book in all of us . Some of us get to write about it, and some don’t.’
Have you taken any classes or special training to become a writer?
I have not taken any formal writing classes. I am learning from other writers by reading their work, and I learn from my editors.
Your Rossler Foundation Mysteries and Carter Devereux Series both have an archeological base; what is your interest in archeology?
I have always been interested in history, and I have learned that it is as Winston Churchill said;
“The victor gets to write the history.” In other words, there is almost always another side, an untold side, to historical events. Not only is knowledge lost over time, [but] it also gets twisted over time. In the scientific community of archeology ‘conformity’ has become a password. Nothing will be accepted unless it conforms to the current [way of] thinking. If anything ‘un-conforming’ is discovered it is either ignored or twisted until it fits into the mold.
How did you come up with the idea for the Rossler Foundation Mysteries and all the code breaking and technologies that are in them?
I watched a TV show on the history channel about the Great Pyramids. The program was about the fact that the pyramids could not have been built the way modern day Egyptologists want to make us believe. I did some research about it and then the idea struck me that I could put my own spin on it and make a series out of it.
How much research goes into one of your books?
I spend anywhere from 3 to 6 months on research for some of my books. Ideas form, I check them out, and many times I get more and new ideas and end up in a totally different place from where I started.
Like the Rossler Foundation Mysteries Series, the Carter Devereux Series also has an archeological backdrop but has an entirely different direction to it. How did you come up with the idea for this series?
I always had and still have my doubts about the theory of evolution. It is as I have said in the first book of the series – Nothing New Under the Sun.
It’s estimated that the earth is about 4.6 billion years old and that life in one form or another has been around for the last 3.6 billion years. Scientists say that the Homo species evolved from primates, about 1.7 to 2 million years ago. ‘Wise man’ or ‘knowing man’ in Latin, known as Homo sapiens appeared on the scene after two spontaneous evolutionary leaps, one about 450,000 years ago and another about 200,000 years ago.
That means it took 1 billion years for the first life to evolve and from that moment onward for 3.6 billion years all life forms in water, air, and on land developed. Modern humans, however, are only present in the last two hundred thousand years of that entire timeline. In other words, if the 3.6 billion years represent one hour, then each second represents ten million years; that means humans only arrived in the last one fiftieth of the last second.
I beg to differ and if I look at the writings of people like Michael A. Cremo, Erich von Däniken, Alan F. Alford, Robert Bauval, Zecharia Sitchin and many others I am not the only one who is questioning the current account of our history. Not sure about the alien theory some of those authors cling to, however.
Your Carter Devereux character has a hobby of learning foreign languages and is fluent in several. Do you speak more than one language, and if so, which ones?
Afrikaans is my first language, English, a little bit of German and Dutch.
Your Exonerated Series is a departure from the archeological influence; what inspired you to change direction and write this series?
I have been a lawyer for 15 years of my life. For a large part of those 15 years, I have been a criminal trial lawyer, and I have seen that the legal system is fallible.
You write about many countries and you currently live on the Gold Coast of Australia; have you visited any or all of them?
I was born and bred in Namibia, lived in South Africa, New Zealand, USA, and Australia. I have also been to the UK, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, Angola, and Zambia.
What hobbies do you have?
Reading – alternative history, health, and archeology. Of course, writing now. Sport – Rugby.
